Diya and Kabir are both six, and they are each other's favorite person outside their own family.

Diya lives in Chennai. She collects seashells from the beach on Sunday mornings and lines them up on her window sill, biggest to smallest. She has strong opinions about which stories should be read at bedtime, and she is not shy about sharing them. Her hair is in two braids, always slightly uneven, because she braids the second one herself.

They met two years ago at a family wedding in Jaipur. Both were four. Diya had a butterfly clip in her hair; Kabir was hiding under a table. Diya crawled under and asked him what he was doing. He said, "I don't like this many people." Diya said, "Me neither." That was the beginning.
